    • Mrs A. Paterson
    • Mr J. Rousseau

Aims

We aim to offer all pupils a positive language learning experience. Through the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, we aim to enhance students’ ability to communicate with others in a foreign language, to enable them to express with confidence their thoughts, feelings and ideas, and to arm them with the knowledge of how language works. We attempt to foster cultural awareness and to assist students to view themselves as part of wider European and global communities. We encourage learner autonomy and positive interaction with others. We also hope to highlight to students the importance of their language skills in the world of work.

Courses

French is taught in p6 and p7 in Broughton’s cluster primaries and is delivered predominantly by staff in the cluster schools. Two members of staff from the Modern Languages department at Broughton also teach once a week in 3 of our feeder primaries. Pupils continue to study French in S1-S4. The vast majority work towards Standard Grade at the end of S4 but a small group works towards Access 3 French in S3 and S4. If this course is completed ahead of schedule, pupils go on to complete extra units in either Spanish or German at Access 3 level.

French is offered in S5 and S6 at Intermediate 2, Higher and Advanced Higher levels.

Pupils are offered the chance to study a second foreign language in S3. The language offered is Spanish. After Standard Grade, students can progress to Intermediate 2 or Higher in S5.

A third foreign language, Italian, is offered in S5/6. Students may opt for Intermediate 1 in S5 and progress to Intermediate 2 in S6 or may attempt Intermediate 2 in one year – either in S5 or S6.
