Physical Working Environment

The Drama department comprises the main Theatre, two studio spaces and a staff base. In addition, the department also houses a workshop and costume wardrobes.

The Theatre is purpose built for large and small scale productions, and fully equipped with lighting and sound facilities. The theatre is a shared space, used by Drama, Dance and Music for rehearsals and to stage productions throughout the year.

Every year pupils are given full training to operate all the lighting and sound equipment in the Theatre, and it is these same pupils who provide all the technical support for all the presentations and productions staged.

Courses

The department offers the full range of courses form 5-14 to Standard Grade and Higher Drama. All pupils in S1 and S2 receive 1 hour of Drama per week; Standard Grade classes receive 3 hours per week; and Higher pupils receive the standard 5 hours of classes per week. In addition, to class contact time pupils very often work on in the department well after the normal school day is finished, either to improve or finish practical course work or, as is more often the case, to rehearse plays and musicals for school productions.

Drama provides young people with a valuable insight to different aspects of their lives. They are given opportunities to express and communicate their thoughts, feeling and opinions on a wide range of different themes, topics and issues. Through course work and presentations, it is hoped that pupils will improve and develop their personal and social skills, primarily their confidence and communication skills. Finally, Drama courses also aim to develop pupils understanding and appreciation of the dramatic media, providing opportunities to improve and hone presentation skills through the experience of working within Theatre, Television, and Radio.

Broughton Youth Theatre

BYT provides an opportunity for pupils to experience all aspects of working within live Theatre. Every year the company stages either a play or a musical, usually in the Summer term. Pupils are wholly responsible for all elements of the production, from lighting and sound to stage management and set building.

The Youth Theatre is open to all young people within the Community from the age of 14 to 21.

Specialist Acting

The Drama department has recently begun offering a Specialist Acting course. The course takes place every Friday afternoon and is funded by OOSHLA.

The course is specifically aimed at students who want to develop and hone their Acting skills, and opportunities are provided for pupils to explore a range of dramatic texts. Each year, the course concludes with a presentation, given by the students, of the full range of play extracts which have been worked on throughout the year.

Cross Cirricular Art Projects

Two years ago, Broughton High School staged a cross curricular performing arts project involving Drama, Music and Dance. The project was a full scale production of Little Shop of Horrors. The performances took place over four nights and played to packed houses. The feedback from audiences was unprecedented, and further serves to endorse the exceptional high standard of work which exists within the Performing Arts at Broughton High School.

This years production is another cross curricular performing arts project: a musical version of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, once again involving all three disciplines.
