Business and enterprise are at the heart of national growth and development, and this is reflected in the important role that business education plays in the curriculum. The provision of business education offers opportunities for individuals to develop the crucial skills and knowledge which allow them to access, understand and contribute to the dynamic and complex business and information environment. Whatever the career pathway, business education can provide a valuable experience to enhance individual effectiveness. Business Education Departments offers 2 courses progressing from Standard Grade to Higher or Advanced Higher:

Administration : Administration is crucial to the effective and efficient delivery of business and organisational objectives. The role of administration is to provide support or services to underpin operations and decision making within the organisation. Using information and communications technology has become part of office work to such an extent that it is now an essential tool for all who work in administration in any business environment. Study of this course will not only equip pupils with competence in a range of software packages used in an office environment but will also enable them to research, evaluate and summarise information in an effective way.

Business Management : The study of Business Management will provide opportunities for pupils to develop the crucial skills and knowledge which allow them to access, understand and contribute to the dynamic and complex business and information environment. The course focuses on analysis of and decision making in the key functional areas of business, such as finance, marketing and human resource management. The importance of enterprise is highlighted, as is the increasing role that ICT plays particularly in decision making. As a result, the course helps to equip pupils to cope with the requirements of today's changing employment market.

More detailed information on Standard Grade and NQ Administration and Business Management courses can be found in www.ceg.org.uk/nq.

Business Education Department also provides courses in S1 and S2:

S1    This course aims to develop good keyboard skills and effective use of word processing packages. The final assessment consists of a project on ‘My First Year at Broughton', which allows pupils to put their skills to use.

S2    Pupils follows the Information and Communications Technology unit of the NQ Core Skills course and have the opportunity to gain a certificate to indicate their ICT skills. The course includes searching for and presenting information from the Internet, and using spreadsheets, desktop publishing and Powerpoint.
