Course ExamplesHigher Biology Student Information Sheet 2003-2004 Introduction: Higher Biology is a broad based biology course builds on concepts developed in Standard Grade Biology and Intermediate 2 Biology. It provides a general basis for further study or employment in areas related to biology. This course provides opportunities for you to acquire: Knowledge and understanding of biological concepts and the applications of biology in society and industry Skills in problem solving Practical abilities associated with biology Positive attitudes such as being open minded, willingness to recognise alternative points of view, an interest in biology and your environment, as well as an understanding of how the decisions humans make can affect the quality of the environment.
Course ContentThe course is made up of three units. Unit 1 — Cell Biology (approximately 10 weeks) • Cell Structure in Relation to Function • Photosynthesis • Energy Release • Synthesis and Release of Proteins • Cellular Response in Defence in Animals and Plants
Unit 2 — Genetics and Adaptation (approximately 10 weeks) • Variation • Selection and Speciation • Animal and Plant Adaptations Unit 3 — Control and Regulation (approximately 10 weeks) • Control of Growth and Development • Physiological Homeostasis • Population Dynamics
The remaining class time will be spent revising and practising skills needed for the examination, completing practical work, and applying knowledge in more depth.
