A new e-mail system is currently being worked on by BT and is predicted to be supplied to schools by Christmas 2007.  The problems that have been occurring are due to the massive amounts of Spam mail that has to be dealt with by the filters. Information will be provided as soon as the new mail servers are in place.

I wish that I was Peter Pan. It's not fair - they're making me leave school - I'm too old to stay! It means I can't go on another ski trip! Of course I'll always have the memories

This years trip was perhaps the best yet. As it turns out, there was a plentiful supply of lovely snow and lots of ridiculously sunny days to keep everybody happy on the slopes for hours. The resort was really picturesque with lots of trees. The village of Villeneuve itself was nice with one vital feature - a pizza place for the nights when dinner at the hotel was not entirely delicious. One night our meal stayed fast in place even when the plate was held vertically! But I guess that's all the fun.

I think that, this year especially, everybody on the trip felt like one big group. It was good to share the fun with such nice people. Everybody got involved in the games night (which my team won by the way) so all the year groups mixed together which makes a difference.

By the end of the week nobody wanted to go home - we all wanted to be back on the slopes the next day. But we had to, taking with us the memories of our excellent week, a few muscle twinges and an all encompassing sense of achievement. For me it was learning to turn and achieve first level in snowboarding, for others it was progressing a level from last year and some are advanced enough to undertake an instructors course which they hope to do in their gap years.

We finished off the trip with almost everybody crammed into one room to watch the blood moon appear over the alpine horizon. It was quite surreal to be sitting in the cold and d ark surrounded by the snow and silence as the moon changed in front of us

Overall, this trip was amazing, so thank you Mr Grieve and Mr Stewart and to everybody on the trip who made that week the best I've had.

Keira Weir - 6A

We had 3 successful basketball teams this year. Broughton has an U-14 Girls' team, U-15 Boys and a Senior Boys' team. All have taken part in the Edinburgh Schools league for the first time this year and also in the Scottish Cup, which has taken the boys travelling to schools such as Tain Academy in Inverness and Boclair Academy in Glasgow. The U-15s got through to the Quarter Finals in the Scottish Plate but unfortunately lost out to Craigmount. Training still continues as we still hope to have some friendly games in the summer term.

Training

The BA (Honours) students from Telford College - The Centre for Professional Dance Training came to Broughton High School as part of their annual Taking Flight, Scottish Tour.  The 18 students performed a diverse mix of jazz and contemporary dance in the school theatre.  The performance was supported by a creative workshop based on one of the pieces in the repertoire.

S4 pupils have been busy choreographing their own dances based around themes such as plastic surgery, drugs, secrets, war and emotions.  The choreography forms part of their Higher Dance Practice Course.  The pupils will sit their exam at Telford College on the 27^th April.  All of the pupils will be completing their choreography during their Easter Study School on the Monday and Tuesday morning.

S3 pupils have been working with HND Telford Sudents for two hours every Friday afternoon for the past six weeks.  The students choreographed a dance to Flashdance and the S3 pupils performed it in the Dance Artists show St Stephen's Church.

The Bronze Group is currently working towards achieving their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh through Broughton High School. To achieve this award, the candidates have been organising and completing four disciplines: - Service, Skill, Physical Activity and an Expedition.

The Qualifier Expedition

This year our qualifed volunteers have organised the Qualifier Expedition in April. This Expedition will focus on team building, comminication, navigation, route planning, first aid, preparing food, walking and health/safety - and having some FUN!

In order to take part in the qualifier expedition, the candidates have already gone through rigorous traning sessions. This included two practice expeditions, which involved each candidate carrying all their kit for two days walking and a night under the canvas. The candidates have also spent a day in the hills testing their navigation skills and waterproofs (it was extremely wet!). We are now confident that each candidate is well prepared for the qualifier expedition... and should pass with flying colours!

Duke of Edinburgh Award Leader

Ross Cooper from the Curve Foundation Dance Company has been delivering contemporary dance workshops to students in all year groups.  The S5/S6 pupils currently studying Advanced Higher Dance learnt repertoire from his company: the piece was entitled "First Draft."  They performed "First Draft" at Dance Base on Sunday 18^th March and it was excellent.

Early in the team S2 pupils had the opportunity to work with dancers from Y Dance and attend the show "RISK" at North Edinburgh Arts Centre. The company dancers guided the pupils through a warm up which incorporated acting and dance before teaching street dance repertorie from the show.  The show was about "decisions young people make as they walk the line between feeling alive and staying alive.

Gymnasts from Broughton High School participated in the Edinburgh Schools Gymnastics Competition. This was a qualifying event for the Scottish Schools Gymnastics Competition. We had two groups competing at Level 1 - Emma Walker, Jodi Darge, Amy Lonnie, Jody Stanton, Lois Glen, Hannah Mack and Charlie Brinkhurst and another group competing at Level 2: Nyomi Hogg, Jody Davidson and Frances Fraser Reid.

The pupils did very well with Level 1 groups finishing 4th and 5th and the Level 2 group finishing 4th.
