Broughton Film Success for Pupils |

Here is a report from Mr Cairns of the Media Department after the success of some young Brougton film makers. Broughton students won the Advertising Plus Award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival schools event on Friday. This was one of 6 awards made in different categories as part of the inaugural Secondary Vision competition for young film makers in schools. Between the award ceremony at Filmhouse on Friday and the public screening at Cineworld on Saturday the students have reached an audience of around 4/500 people with a piece of work done as part of their course in Media Studies. Not only that but to have a winner’s award, from an event as prestigious as the EIFF, is a huge accomplishment for them. It was a really exciting occasion for all our students and it was great to see how well film making in Broughton stood up against films made in other schools – I know I’m biased but I thought our film was far and away the best live action piece on show. I’m really proud of the students and I hope that you might take the chance to congratulate the winners if you see them. There is a lovely trophy ( which I will need to work out what to do with ) and, on Mr Fyfe’s return, we will be able to circulate photos from the event. The winners were:- Caitlin Reid, Gina Cameron, Kirsty Mackay, Lorn McDonald, Beth Jack, Amy Leach |

Bids No you haven’t missed anything – we’re waiting on confirmation of our budget before we open for bids. I know the wait is frustrating but bear with us and keep coming up with new ideas. I’ll let you know as soon as we have the information. Maths Visit Jane Gray had a very successful visit to the Geometry in Art exhibition at the Dean Gallery. Her class produced work which is now on display in her room – I’m sure she’d be delighted if you wanted to view it. Marketing Apprentice Thanks to all who allowed Katie Renton, Danielle Willis, Angie Livingstone and Ross Macrae to attend the initial meeting at Visit Scotland with Anna Godley. It was an interesting, if very intensive, start to the competition. More info as we progress. State Street Bank We have a new project with Maths/Business Studies and State Street Bank. Our Higher pupils in these subjects have been offered a chance to see their subjects “at work” in a visit to the bank offices. So far 76 students have expressed an interest and the visits will be around Christmas time. There’s a chance that it may also lead to employment opportunities – fingers crossed! If any other departments would like to be linked with a suitable business partner – please get in touch. There are hundreds of opportunities out there. Enterprise Space Although we have an Enterprise space in Hall A – it isn’t the most practical place for working. So, we are on the look out for a new home. We would like somewhere that can be used by everyone as a work space, meeting area, library and store for resources and books. Any thoughts get in touch. Team Projects In May we had some excellent ideas for volunteer projects – when businesses offer their services to the school. It looks like the first of these will happen in October. Watch the space in Modern Languages and English…. Working Group There is now an Enterprise Working Group. We couldn’t meet last week due to illness (mine!) but we are due to meet very soon and I’m sure you’ll start to notice more Enterprising things going on around the school. The members are: Lisa Evans, Audrey Gristwood, Stuart Donoghue, Anna Godley, Nicola Daniel and Catherine Frew. If you would like to join us or if you have any Enterprising ideas/initiatives for your subject, classroom or the school, please let us know. |

Trip to 'Hamlet' in Glasgow |

The Department ran a trip to the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow to see a production of William Shakespeare's 'Hamlet', directed by the renowned director, Guy Hollands, who recently directed 'Yellow Moon' shown at the Lyceum. The play was a fantastic production, full of humour and darkness. The highlights were the truly frightening ghost and the bawdy production of the 'play within the play' which was highly amusing, yet very effectve, making use of shadows and mime in addition to the comedic aspects. The group enjoyed the production hugely, despite the traffic jams and 'bus related' issues! We hope to do another trip later this year. |
